Using Adverbs can really improve the quality of your speaking and writing.  Adverbs make your sentences come alive because adverbs are often used to modify verbs or adjectives, which of course are action and description words, respectively.  In this manner, adverbs help your readers and listeners understand more about the subject you are writing or speaking about.
Most adverbs are made by adding the suffix “ly” to the end of a verb or an adjective.  For instance, the adjectives quick and silent become the adverbs quickly, and silently when we use them to describe other verbs.  Look below and I’ll show you how to use a few adverbs.
Tom walked to the car.  Tom walked quickly to the car.  The adverb “quickly” modifies the past tense verb “walked” and enhances the meaning of the sentence.
Tom sat in the doctor’s office.  Tom sat silently in the doctor’s office.  The adverb ”silently” tells your readers and listeners how John “sat” in the doctor’s office.
Adverbs can also be used to modify adjectives.  In this example, you will have two adjectives in your sentence, but we’ll change the first adjective into an adverb that will describe the second adjective.
The oak tree was impressive and tall.  The oak tree was impressively tall.  In this example, we take the adjective “impressive” and use it to enhance the meaning of the adjective “tall.”
A final way that we can use adverbs is when we want to modify and enhance the meaning of other adverbs.  This sentence structure is frequently used in verbal conversations.
He wrote confidently.  He wrote extremely confidently.  In this case, we have two adverbs, “extremely” and “confidently” that we use to describe both the past tense verb “wrote” and the adverb “confidently.”
Now it is your turn.  Change the following words into adverbs and use them in the sentences below.
Slow   Outrageous  Fluent  Patient  Generous
John’s new car was ____________________ expensive.
The dog _____________ ate his dinner.
I have been _______________ sitting through this meeting all morning!
He lived in Korea for 10 years.  He speaks Korean ______________.
